This section of the tutorials will provide information on the file format(s) and impulse response uploading procedures for Fractal Audio Systems hardware from the Axe-Fx II and onward. Original Axe-Fx Standard and Ultra users will need to contact Fractal Audio for information on or support in converting and using 3rd party impulse responses with those legacy products.

SYX File Loading

Like most DSP platforms, under the hood the Fractal Audio Systems hardware products convert external importable content to proprietary system exclusive ("SysEx" // .syx) format to be able to be utilized by the firmware. While there are multiple subformat types (Standard and UltraRes), the import process for IR's with the .syx file extension is the same.

Within the Axe-Edit software for your particular Fractal Audio product type, from the Tools menu at the top, select Manage Cabs. From the pop-up window that ensues, IR files with the .syx file extension can be dragged from your operating system's file explorer window and dropped into slots of your choosing. Make sure to first extract the files from the zip archive to avoid any problems.

Files that are in "UltraRes" format will have a "U" to the left of the file name in the browswer, should you ever have question of which Fractal IR type you've loaded into the slot(s). After dropping in the files, make sure to save the configuration before exiting the Manage Cabs window. Files that have been uploaded can now be selected via a Cab block placed in your preset's signal path.

WAV File Loading

Loading wave audio format (.wav) files directly without first converting them (which can be done via Cab Lab software: Tools > Conversion Utilities > Wav Conversion) requires a slightly different approach. Fractal Audio hardware devices do not accept drag and drop file transfer of .wav files, and still require conversion via an intermediate, in this case the Browser within Manage Cabs in Axe-Edit (located in the Tools menu).

While in Manage Cabs, to the top left select the Browser drop down menu, and select Open Directory to choose a folder to select files from. This will internally convert these files and load them into temporary storage, so that they can be dragged and dropped onto cab slots. Before dragging over files, take note of the settings at the bottom of the Browser pulldown, most notably the IR Processing Mode and IR Output Format settings, as this will affect the format of file you are importing. OwnHammer wave files do not require an additional cascading minimum phase transform, as this will undo the unique sonic characteristics of our proprietary transform that retains most of the character of raw files, leaving the end result more sterile sounding.

While an older video where some of of the menu specifics are slightly different, the below demonstrates this process:
